Core Values
Finding common ground in Minnesota comes down to the core values I grew up with on the farm, refined during my time teaching kids in St. Paul, and put to the test during my thirty-three years in the military. They guide my decisions and actions, and as your Senator you can count on me to serve you through them. Click on each to find out more.

Our economy is fueled by the labor of our small businesses, farms and workers. They deserve fair pay, fair taxes, and a fair profit for their products, services, and labor.
Our work should be valued by everyone in our community – we’re all working together to make Minnesota a great place to live. The American Dream should be achievable through our efforts.
Our family farms and small businesses should have every opportunity to grow and thrive so they can be passed on to the next generation.
Our local governments should be empowered to keep our small towns and cities safe, clean and great places to live.
-
Trust in government comes from people who believe that service is a calling and aren’t looking to help themselves first and others second.
Keep fraud, waste, and abuse out of all levels of government without adding to bureaucracy.
All aspects of our environment can be cared for while building a thriving economy in the public and private sector.
-
Support those who serve our communities. Our police, firefighters, health care workers and emergency medical responders deserve to be fairly compensated, well-equipped and trained.
Public services and support agencies provide needed support for our neighbors and should be well-funded and counted on in our state.
Non-profit service organizations that fill the gaps between private and public services should be both empowered and accountable.
Those who serve us in our military; National Guard, Reserves, Active Duty and Veterans give us their best, and deserve our best in return
-
Our public schools are pillars within our communities and should have funding that reflects our state’s commitment to a well-educated population.
Value the evolving science that keeps us, our people and environment healthy, safe, and more productive.
Public servants who listen first are better equipped to serve others. Understand that everyone brings expertise based on their experience and knowledge.
-
Healthcare services and insurance should be affordable and readily available to everyone.
Our communities should be places where everyone can live, worship, and love freely and with integrity, without fear of isolation or being left behind.
When our communities are safe, they thrive. Gun violence and accidents need to be eliminated with common sense solutions that meet the majority of Minnesotan’s values.
Care and respect for the most vulnerable and historically disadvantaged isn’t just kind, it makes Minnesota stronger. Cruelty has no place in Minnesota.
